Baywatch Avalon Lifeguard Headquarters

In collaboration with Elyse Pignolet

A ceramic tile mural on the exterior of the new headquarters building of

Baywatch Avalon Station, Los Angeles County Lifeguards, on Catalina Island.

Approx. 150 sq. ft., hand-painted on hand-made ceramic tiles.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art Program 2009.

Project completed in Spring of 2010.

The mural depicts a seemingly benign view of scenic Avalon Harbor, with a boat on fire in the distance and a lifeguard boat speeding to its rescue. Other activities of the Baywatch Avalon lifeguards are depicted in six small vignettes surrounding the main image. Beneath the title banner, the dots and dashes of Morse Code spell out S.O.S., and the surrounding decorative framing is a design utilizing local undersea plants. The border design also utilizes historic tiles from the now defunct Catalina Tile Co.
